The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
A reread for my book group. I read this book back in college (not for any classes), and I realize now that I just didn’t get it at that age. I’m sure women older than me who lived through the women’s lib movement got the book, but at the time of my first read, as a young twenty-something who grew up when working mothers, divorced and blended families, and women being able to open bank accounts on their own was the norm, the satire didn’t really register. I understand it now, though that hasn’t made me like the book.
